Beni, the okapi calf born at Disney World in July, is now exploring the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

During his first public appearance, Beni was accompanied by his mother Olivia, who was “closely nudging him on from behind,” according to a post on the Disney Parks Blog.

“And while he still stays pretty close to mom, he is slowly becoming more independent and his endearing personality is starting to show as he matures,” wrote Scott Terrell, director of animal & science operations for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. 

Beni is now four feet tall and weighs about 230 pounds, according to Disney. He could grow to be between 5 and 6 feet tall and weigh up to 650 pounds.

Okapis are endangered in their home country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to Disney. Beni, who is named after a town in the country, was born as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.

Olivia’s pregnancy is featured in the second season of “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” which is currently streaming on Disney+.
