Mount Sabyinyo is the oldest Volcano of the ranges that lies in East Africa lift valley in Virunga National Park. This is the dormant volcano that stands on 3669 meters above the sea level and sharing three countries with one summit at ago, Virunga, Volcano and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda respectively. The name Sabyinyo derives from the Kinyarwanda means “tooth” referring to Mount Sabyinyo, the mount holds religious significance to local tribes.

The slopes of Mount Sabyinyo harbors different vegetation which you pass through to reach on the summit. The lower slopes harbor the bamboo zone that goes up to 2800m high which is habitant for golden monkey, including wildlife animal elephant, buffaloes and mountain gorillas all this can be seen while hiking mount Sabinyo. As you keep on climbing you meet other different vegetation including a patch of Hagenia Hypericum at 3000m high and the sub-alpine zone that has scattered trees which is the best ground for bird lovers since it hosts the famous Rwenzori Turaco and other Albertine rift valley species

While at the summit, you will have a unique opportunity to stand at the meeting point of the three countries Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. According to the rugged nature with the sharp ridges of Sabinyo, climbing mount Sabinyo is done in only Uganda, unlike the other two countries where it’s found. Uganda has improved its walking trail through setting up ladders in order to easier the climber to the summit.  The climbing is challenging and requires some physical fitness in order to reach on top which is a 1-day hike about 4 hours to the summit and 4 hours back to the starting pointing.

We advise you to take a walking stick to support you when climbing, enough food and drinking water at least three litters since it gets hot and thirsty as you hike. The jacket is recommendable since it becomes cold the higher you go and the camera to capture that wonderful moment, hiking shoes, long-sleeved shirt, and trouser and among other amenities

Visiting Mountain Sabinyo is done every day all year round and the best time is in the dry season when the walking trail is dry and less slippery that easier the hiking. The dry season falls in the month of December, January, February, and June, July, August, and September.
